Coaching Leaders in Constant Change – The 21st Century Challenge

Learning Agility

In order to coach leaders more effectively, David explained the concept of Learning Agility (Mitchinson & Morris, 2012) and Mindfulness, paying attention consciously, looking for what is new and different, questioning preconceived ideas (Langer, 1998-2011). As well as, the ability to be fully aware and open to the experience of the present moment –non-judgmental attention (Lee, 2012), as two critical skills for leading in turbulent times. Thus, coaching leaders in constant change will still remain a challenge in the times to come.

Moments of reflections

Further, he encouraged leaders to have “moments of reflections to keep ourselves open to exploring new ideas and implications.” Also, he highly recommended that as we deal with more complexity and constant change both in our personal and professional lives, three qualities are essential: presence, focus, awareness, and non-judgment (Brown, Ryan & Creswell, 2007). Therefore, coaching leaders in constant change is possible.

My leadership and coaching experience

As I visit more and more places around the world, I detect three key aspects: lack of meaningful long-term goals, lack of presence and absence of focus. This trend is increasing. Also, directly affecting leaders across companies worldwide. We perceive being busy as chic. Therefore, coaching leaders in constant change is possible if there is an intention of self-improvement.

Are leaders today carrying a life of purpose?

However, these leaders find it hard to look within themselves to see the truth, and therefore, take a life of purpose. An increasing number of seniors want others to perceive them as having a busy lifestyle when they are missing out on living the present. Life has no guarantee; not realizing this is the real FOMO. As a result, it becomes more difficult each day to coach leaders in constant change.

Do we love ourselves enough to stop judging?

Judgment will stop happening when we love ourselves sufficiently to stop looking into other people´s lives. To thoroughly enjoy the here and the now, decreasing levels of ego is a must. In this new age, calmness is a prerequisite to happiness. And happiness the key to a harmonious home-work environment.

Are leaders practicing self-awareness?

For this to change, we need to practice self-awareness daily.  This trait will lead to focus and concentration. This personal spiritual retreat will help to know who we are. Also, where we are, what we want and where we are heading. The big picture will be undoubtedly visible, and changes will be more natural to make from a space of knowledge versus chaos.

A framework of self-awareness would help to coach leaders in constant change.

The road to Effective Leadership

To be aware of our thoughts and emotions, open without evaluation, with an accepting attitude and in the present moment is not easy. However, it is one of the roads to effective leadership. Someone who genuinely practices achieving these traits will master its weaknesses making the person ready to lead others in the right direction.

The call: Looking inward and looking forward to a new framework of leadership. Thus, learning new ways to manage change will be critical to success.
